THE HISTORY OF BONNY
KATE CHAPTER DAR |
|
Bonny Kate Chapter was organized by Miss
Mary Boyce Temple, a prominent Knoxvillian and regent of Bonny Kate
Chapter for many years. She also founded Ossili and gave a generous donation to
Memorial Continental Hall, putting Bonny
Kate Chapter first in the state.
She aided Mrs. Manning, President
General, in the selection of the
location of Memorial Continental Hall in
Washington D.C. She was present at the
laying of the cornerstone. Later she
invested in the $200,000.00 bond to complete
the building. |
|
In 1921, at the dedication
of the Tennessee D.A.R. Hall
for boys at Lincoln Memorial
University at Harrogate,
Tennessee, Miss Temple, as
Bonny Kate regent, made the
presentation speech and was
recognized for raising
significant funds for the
school. |
|
About 1921, Bonny Kate
Chapter established two
mountain libraries: one
in Unicoi County and the other at Oliver
Springs. In 1923, Bonny Kate Chapter
contributed money toward the
statues of Andrew Jackson
and John Sevier to be placed
in Statuary Hall in the
National Capitol. |
|
In 1925, Blount
Mansion, the
birthplace of
the state of
Tennessee and
the home of
Governor William
Blount of the
Territory South
of the Ohio, was
about to be
razed for
business
purposes. This
brought prompt
action by Bonny
Kate and Miss
Temple, who was
regent at the
time, to make
plans to save
the Mansion.
Miss Temple gave
a personal check
of $100.00 to
hold the option.

and hangs in the
Mansion. It
was by far the
greatest
historical
undertaking of
the chapter. The
safety of the
Mansion was
assured when it
was pronounced
the “most
historic spot”
in Tennessee. |
|
|
Since that time, Bonny Kate
Chapter has marked many
historical spots, including
the Old Chisholm Tavern on
Front Street and the
birthplace of Bonny Kate
Chapter on SE corner of West
Cumberland and Market
Street. The Bonny Kate
Chapter has also placed a
marker on the Henley Street
Bridge in memory of Col.
Henley and attended the
unveiling of the John Sevier
statue in the Hall of Fame
in Washington, D.C. |

We celebrated our centennial anniversary
on Thursday October 7, 1993, in memory of
the anniversary of the Battle of King’s
Mountain. |
|
In 2007, Ollie N. Ellison,
Regent of the Bonny Kate
Chapter, concluded that there
should be an Internet online
presence for the chapter.
Ollie then contacted Darrell
G. Waddell, a webmaster with
whom she had worked
previously on other
projects, about creating a
web site for the chapter.
They began collaborating on
the design and development
until the web site was
completed. |
|
In late 2007, the web site
went public, after careful
review by both the TNDAR and
NSDAR web site approval
representatives. The site
was approved on December 9,
2007 and linked as a
“Recognized Site,” and
assigned the permanent URL
link of:
http://www.tndar.org/~bonnykate/. |
