Our Chapter History

The Captain William Edmiston Chapter, NSDAR, was named for the ancestor of the organizing Regent, Willie Erwin Daniel (Mrs. William Daniel). The chapter was established on November 7, 1914, by 12 women who met at her home. There were 20 charter members. The chapter grew from 104 to 135 members and retained its name when it merged with the Colonel John Montgomery Chapter, NSDAR, on July 5, 2004.

Captain William Edmiston/Edmundson

Captain William Edmiston/Edmondson was born in 1734 in Augusta County, Virginia. He died while fighting ahead of his company at the Battle of Kings Mountain in South Carolina on October 7, 1780. He was one of the rangers on the expedition into South Carolina. 

Captain Edmiston was in Colonel William Campbell’s Virginia Regiment when he was killed. He is buried in Kings Mountain Battleground Cemetery in Blacksburg, Cherokee County, South Carolina.

Willie Mae Daniel

Willie Smith Erwin Daniel was born January 20, 1877, in Hampshire, Maury County, Tennessee. She passed away on January 4, 1958, in Clarksville, Montgomery County, Tennessee, at the age of 80.  She was the daughter of Rev. Joseph Boyd Erwin and Frances Caldonia Smith Erwin. She married William Madison Daniel, Jr., on October 17, 1899, in Clarksville, Montgomery County, Tennessee.

On December 23, 2019, 30 women from the Captain William Edmiston Chapter, NSDAR, honored this organizing regent at Greenwood Cemetery with a grave marking ceremony.  Among those attending were Chapter members and the granddaughters of our founder.
