General William Lenoir Chapter, NSDAR
In 1810, Major William Ballard Lenoir, son of General William Lenoir, came to this area of North Carolina, now Tennessee, with his wife and five children; seven more children were born after they settled the area of present-day Lenoir City. Now the site of two Tennessee Valley Authority dams with a connecting canal between the two formed lakes, the area is suitably known for water recreation and as one of the gateways to the Smokies.
The General William Lenoir Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on October 15, 1925, in Lenoir City, Tennessee and confirmed by the NSDAR on October 22, 1925. The chapter was named in honor of General William Lenoir, an American Revolutionary War soldier from North Carolina. The chapter was organized with 21 members, six of those being descendants of General Lenoir.
The founding officers were:
- Elizabeth Foster Lacy, Regent. Her Patriot was James Hoge, Jr. (A056515)
- Georgia Burdette Williams Vice Regent. Her Patriot was Captain William Lenoir (A069232) Promoted to Major General in 1795 while serving in the State Militia.
- Annie Foster Leeper, Recording Secretary. Her Patriots were James Hogg, Jr., (A056515), William Foster (A041903), Captain James Gilmore (A045237) and Matthew Russell (A098501).
- Annie Foster Callaway, Corresponding Secretary. Her Patriot was James Hoge, Jr. (A056515)
- Bessie Huff Jump, Registrar. Her Patriot was Rev. Joseph Rhea (A093547)
- Linnie Lacy Moore, Treasurer. Her Patriot was James Hoge, Jr. (A056515)
