Since its organization, the Shelby Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR), has tried to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American Independence by:
The Shelby Chapter, NSDAR, honors those living veterans who are in local nursing homes or the VA hospitals and helps to maintain monuments to the memory of veterans from Bedford County who served in the American Revolutionary War. Shelbyville and Bedford County are fortunate to have an active County Veterans Affairs Officer who keeps us informed.
The chapter remains active in community service. Members volunteer in nursing homes, the hospital, the Bedford County Archives in the courthouse, the library, schools, and churches. We have many enthusiastic members both young and young at heart!
The chapter is a strong supporter of education in local schools as well as the DAR schools. Each year the chapter presents students with DAR Good Citizens awards at the annual George Washington Tea. We have supported outstanding students for DAR scholarships and work with the local schools to promote patriotism and sponsor history essay and poster contests. Volunteers hand out Pledge of Allegiance bookmarks and miniature American flags to elementary students at an end-of-summer reading celebration in conjunction with the local public library. We love our Patriots, our soldiers, and our community!
