Annual Chapter Events
While our chapter participates in and sponsors many events throughout the year, there are some that have become an annual tradition.
Caring For Old Harmony Cemetery
The Nolachuckey Chapter, NSDAR, began improving Old Harmony Cemetery in the 1950s. Old Harmony Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Greeneville, with some graves pre-dating the American Revolutionary War. Since the 1950s, our chapter has restored the cemetery, mapped it, built a brick wall surrounding it, and placed markers to honor the patriots buried there. We continue this maintenance work today, repairing and caring for parts of the cemetery displaying extreme wear and deterioration.
Christmas Open House
As part of Main Street Greeneville’s “Christmas in Downtown,” Nolachuckey Daughters decorate the Bartlett-Patterson DAR house, built by President Andrew Johnson’s great-granddaughter. The house is built in the same style as the nearby Andrew Johnson homeplace. The home is decorated in keeping with the time period and style. During the “Christmas in Downtown” open house, Nolachuckey Daughters are stationed in different rooms of the home, sharing information about the Johnson family.
Awards & Scholarships
Every year our chapter sponsors several awards and scholarships for members of the greater Greene County community. Nolachuckey Daughters sponsor the American History Essay Contest, which encourages students in grades five through eight to write about a particular American History prompt. The chapter also awards the DAR Good Citizenship Award, which recognizes local youths and allows the awardees to pursue associated scholarships. ROTC medals are given to outstanding ROTC student cadets in Greene County. Daughters also sponsor and support the awarding of two scholarships to attendees of Tusculum University, the Carrie McGaughey Clemens Scholarship and the Mary Hurley Wells Scholarship.
Naturalization Ceremonies
Nolachuckey Daughters often attend naturalization ceremonies for our newest American citizens. These are held regularly at the Federal Courthouse in Greeneville. After the new citizens swear the oath of allegiance and are naturalized, Daughters congratulate the new citizens, awarding each an American flag.
