****General Jethro Sumner****
The chapter, as well as our county, is named after one of the heroes of the Revolutionary War, General Jethro Sumner. General Sumner was born and raised in Virginia, and he fought in the French and Indian Wars after which he moved to Bute County, North Carolina. There he acquired a significant amount of land and opened a tavern.
During the Revolutionary War, Sumner commanded the North Carolina 3rd Regiment. He served as brigadier general from 1779 – 1783. General Sumner fought in many battles. He and his regiment served with General George Washington in the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown, and they also endured the infamous winter in Valley Forge.
After the war, Sumner helped establish the North Carolina chapter of the Society of the Cincinnati in which he served as the chapter’s first president. General Sumner died in 1785.
