The General Jethro Sumner Chapter NSDAR was organized October 21, 1931, in Gallatin, Tennessee, at the home of the first regent, Grace Franklin House. The chapter, as well as county, was named for Brigadier General Jethro Sumner, ” one of the most distinguished general officers of the Continental Line to survive the war.”
The chapter began with fourteen charter members, has grown ten-fold since its inception 85 years ago and currently has 140 members. Our membership ranges in age from 19 – 90 years old. From stay-at-home moms, to teachers, nurses, business women, and artists, the diversity of our group enables us serve our communities in a variety of ways.
We are passionate about serving our veterans, honoring our heritage and educating our youth. We serve both our active duty military as well as our retired veterans. Through restoring cemeteries, acting as docents at historical sites, and participating in historical events, our chapter helps to ensure the county’s heritage isn’t forgotten. We believe our children are the future of this great nation. Whether it be distributing portraits of President George Washington, recognizing high school seniors as DAR Good Citizens or awarding JROTC medals, we work tirelessly to encourage students to continue the work our patriot ancestors began.
